Acoustic Intumescent Sealant CAIS

The PFC Corofil Acoustic Intumescent Sealant (CAIS) is an acrylic-based sealant used to form fire-resistant seals in wall and floor constructions. It is suitable for two distinct applications: as a linear gap seal where gaps are present in or between wall and floor constructions, and as a penetration seal where services such as cables and metallic pipes pass through fire-rated structures. In both cases, the sealant works by swelling on heating, expanding to seal the opening and prevent the passage of fire and smoke between compartments.

Supplied in 310ml cartridges and 600ml foils, CAIS is gunned into the aperture or joint to a specified depth using various backing materials. It is third-party certified under UL-EU-01167-CPR and tested to both EN1366-3:2009 and EN1366-4:2006, providing a two-hour fire-rated sealant solution across a range of wall and floor construction types. It is also suitable for linear joints up to 60mm wide.

What is an Intumescent Sealant?

An intumescent sealant is a fire-stopping product that reacts to heat by expanding significantly in volume, sealing openings and gaps to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through a structure. Unlike standard sealants, which provide only physical gap filling, this sealant provides an active fire barrier, swelling to many times its original size when exposed to elevated temperatures. This expansion closes off the penetration or joint, maintaining the fire resistance of the surrounding wall or floor construction and preserving building compartmentation.

The PFC Corofil Acoustic Intumescent Sealant is formulated to offer both fire resistance and acoustic performance, making it well suited to applications where sound attenuation as well as fire stopping is required.

Where should you use Intumescent Acoustic Sealant?

CAIS is a versatile intumescent sealant suitable for a broad range of fire stopping applications across flexible and rigid wall constructions and rigid floor constructions. Its primary uses are:

Linear gap seals – reinstating fire resistance where gaps are present in or between wall and floor elements. CAIS is suitable for linear joints up to 60mm and is used in conjunction with the following products:

Penetration seals – reinstating fire resistance in rigid and flexible wall constructions where they have been penetrated by cables or metallic pipes. CAIS is also required to seal all joints and junctions when the Coated Panel System (CCPS) is installed, and is used in conjunction with the following products:

For the Universal Pipe Wrap, CAIS is used to seal the annular gap between the combustible pipe and the aperture. For the Intumescent Pipe Collar and Pipe Wrap, it is used to seal the annular gap around the pipe at the point of penetration. When used with the Coated Panel System, it seals all joints and junctions as part of the overall penetration seal assembly.

Certain seals require the use of 6mm foil-lined ceramic to insulate the service, and some require backfilling with stone wool. Full details are provided in the technical data sheet.

Why Choose a Third-Party Certified Intumescent Sealant?

Third-party certification provides independent assurance that a fire stopping product has been tested and assessed against the relevant European standards by an accredited body. For specifiers, contractors, and building control professionals, third-party certified products such as CAIS provide confidence that the fire resistance performance claimed has been verified under controlled test conditions.

The PFC Corofil Acoustic Intumescent Sealant is third-party certified under UL-EU-01167-CPR and is also listed on NBS Source, making it straightforward to specify within NBS-based specifications.

Where should you use Acoustic Intumescent Sealant?

Our fire-stopping Acoustic Intumescent Sealant should be used to reinstate the fire performance of gaps in and joints between flexible and rigid wall constructions and gaps in and joints between rigid floor constructions. You can also use it to reinstate the fire performance in rigid and flexible wall constructions where they have been penetrated by various cables or metallic pipes.
